CHOLERA OUTBREAK IN GHANA, ESPECIALLY ACCRA
There is currently a cholera outbreak in Ghana, with a significant impact in Accra. Cholera can make you very ill and can even result in death, especially among children and older adults who are particularly vulnerable.
What is Cholera?
Cholera is an infectious disease caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacteria. It spreads primarily through contaminated water and can lead to severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalances if not treated quickly.
Symptoms of Cholera:
- Severe diarrhoea (often watery)
- Muscle cramps
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Dehydration (which can manifest as dry skin, rapid heart rate, and dizziness)
Prevention Measures:
Cholera can be effectively prevented through a combination of personal hygiene and safe practices. Here are key steps to take:
- Wash Your Hands Regularly:
- Use soap and clean water, especially after using the toilet, before eating, and after handling food.
- If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol.
- Cook Food Thoroughly:
- Ensure food, especially seafood and meats, is cooked to safe temperatures.
- Avoid raw or undercooked foods, particularly in areas with known cholera outbreaks.
- Practice Safe Food Handling:
- Keep kitchen surfaces and utensils clean.
- Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards for raw and cooked foods.
- Drink Safe Water:
- Use boiled or treated water for drinking and cooking.
- Avoid drinking untreated water, especially from lakes, rivers, or unregulated sources.
- Maintain Clean Environments:
- Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.
- Dispose of waste properly and avoid open defecation.
- Wash Clothes and Bathe Safely:
- Bathe and wash clothes at least 30 meters away from drinking water sources to avoid contamination.
- Use clean water for bathing, especially for children.

- If you experience severe symptoms, such as watery diarrhoea or vomiting, seek medical attention immediately. Early treatment is critical.
